Overview

A grid-tied solar system is the most cost-effective way to reduce your monthly electricity bill. Solar panels generate power during the day, which is consumed directly by your home or business. Any surplus is fed back to the grid through a net-metering arrangement with your utility provider (VECO, MECO, or CEBECO). There are no batteries in a standard grid-tied system, which keeps costs lower. The trade-off is that the system does not provide power during a grid outage — it shuts down automatically for safety.

How It Works

During daylight hours, solar panels generate DC power. An inverter converts it to AC power for use in your home or business. When solar output exceeds your consumption, the excess flows back to the grid and your electric meter runs backward (net-metering). At night or on cloudy days, you draw normally from the grid.
