Of all the questions we get about our STX generator range, "can it run my aircon?" is the most common — and the most misunderstood. The answer depends less on continuous wattage than most people assume, and more on a number most shoppers never check: peak (surge) watts.

Why aircon is different from other appliances

A refrigerator, a fan, or a TV draws a roughly steady amount of power once running. An air conditioner's compressor, on the other hand, draws a large surge of power for a fraction of a second at start-up — often 2 to 3 times its rated running watts — before settling down. A generator that only looks at continuous wattage will undersize for this spike and trip out or shut down.

What runtime to expect

At 3,200Wh of LiFePO₄ capacity, running a 1HP aircon alongside typical household loads (lighting, Wi-Fi, refrigerator) gives approximately 4 hours of runtime on a single charge — enough to sleep through a brownout in comfort, or bridge a multi-hour outage during the hottest part of the day.

What it cannot do

Running two aircon units simultaneously, or a larger 1.5HP–2HP unit, exceeds what the STX3500B is designed for — for that load profile, the STX5000W PRO is the appropriate step up, rated to run an aircon for approximately 8 hours from full charge.

If aircon backup is a must-have for your household — not just a nice-to-have — check peak watts, not just continuous watts, on any generator you are considering.
